Alumni Association Hosts Events

Your LSSU Alumni Association hosted several events taking advantage of northern Michigan’s fantastic summer weather. Have you ever been to campus in the summer? If not, you are missing the best time of year! Make plans to head north to Sault Ste. Marie next summer!

Zoo de Mack Cooks
May brings the annual Zoo-de-Mackinac bike ride from Harbor Springs to Mackinaw City, prefaced by the famous Zooberry pancake tailgate in the Boyne Highlands parking lot, cooked by the renowned Mark Poletti ’79. Joining about 3,000 cyclists, a small group of Laker alumni braved the chilly wet weather to complete the 51 mile ride.

Dance Alumni
In June we hosted a reunion of Dance Alumni in the Arts Center. Thanks so much to Noel (Gee) Granger ’13 for initiating, organizing and motivating so many dancers to attend and to Deb Choszczyk for gathering photos and videos, traveling from Marquette and teaching classes all day Saturday.

July saw the annual LSSU outing at Comerica Park, watching the Detroit Tigers take on Cleveland. If you want to see the Tigers WIN, just come to the Laker outing – we pick a winner every time! Lakers gathered pre-game at Kid Rock’s Made In Michigan Restaurant, where attendees got the opportunity to chat with LSSU President Ron Hanley and Trustee Rodney Nelson.

Ice cream social
The Alumni Association welcomes Laker students back to campus every August with an Ice Cream Social on the first day of classes. President Rod Hanley and members of his senior management team scoop ice cream and serve the students.

September featured an After Hours cookout on the lawn outside Lukenda Alumni House, hosted by President Rod Hanley, his wife Sara, and the boys, Harry and Edward. Turns out Harry is an excellent DJ with a good feel for his Dad’s taste in heavy metal! Special thanks to Tom Coates ‘86 for his grilling expertise.

After Hours 1668
Lake State After Hours
is still celebrated the first Thursday of every month! Spring and summer saw Lakers gathering at 313 Ashmun, Wicked Sister, Lockview Restaurant and 1668 Winery.

Look for us this fall at Buffalo Wild Wings in October, Soo Brewing Co. in November and in the Cooper Gym for December. In January we’re planning to cross the river into Soo, Ontario. Would anyone like to suggest a venue?

Coming up this fall and winter are Great Lake State Weekend November 2-4; Laker basketball at Wayne State; Laker hockey at the GLI in Detroit, followed immediately by a Laker group outing at the Detroit Red Wings; hockey socials in Mankato, Marquette and Big Rapids and Basketball Alumni Weekend in February. See our full calendar of upcoming events and make plans now to join us!
