LSSU Welcomes Spring With 55th Annual Snowman Burn

Lake Superior State University declared winter as officially cancelled with the 55th annual snowman burn on March 20. The event featured remarks from Dr. Jamie Zamjahn, Interim Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success, and community poetry read by LSSU Compass staff members.

LSSU Fire Science students and the Sault Ste Marie Fire Department were on standby to ensure a safe and fun experience for the students, staff, and community members present. After the snowman burning, the celebration moved to the Galley, where attendees enjoyed music, complimentary beverages, and chicken strips.

Early Unicorn Hunters snowman

Like the year before, winter proved relentless. The harsh weather underscored the tradition’s origins, when the Unicorn Hunters student group first burned a snowman in hopes of driving away lingering snowstorms as spring approached.
