LSSU Alumna Leads the Way as College Facility Coordinator at Chippewa Correctional Facility

Kandi Wright ’25 has built an impactful career with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Today, she facilitates the first and only higher education-in-prison program in the Upper Peninsula with LSSU. Kandi was previously an officer and then a prison counselor, giving her a wide range of experience with facility operations; experiences that now help her understand the challenges and benefits of post-secondary education programming.
_
Serving as a bridge to other facility staff and the university, she has helped illustrate how successful a program like this can be. Inspired by the men in the program, she went back to LSSU to complete her bachelor's degree, too.
-
Outside the facility, CFC Wright is active with the Michigan Law Enforcement Torch Run, serving as an Area Director in support of Special Olympics. She enjoys giving back and sees value in connecting with her community, as a corrections professional, on the other side of the walls. She recently was chosen to be the torch bearer for opening ceremonies for their Winter Games.
-
When asked what motivates CFC Wright, she said that earlier in her career a man housed in the unit she was posted in got out and ended up moving next door to her parents. Because of quality programs and supervision, he was successful; and to her, that illustrated the importance of quality corrections.
