Greetings Fellow Lakers,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Brittany (Litchard) Barrett and I am a 2014 biology graduate as well as a 2017 nursing graduate from Lake Superior State University. While attending LSSU, I was a member of Student Alumni Involved for Lake State (SAILS), Harry Potter Club, Intramural sports, the Soo Blueliners, and the Pre-Professional Society. I also worked in the library on campus for several years and was an avid Laker Hockey fan. Following graduation in 2014, I joined the Lake Superior State University Alumni Association Board of Directors and have remained an active member since. In that time, I’ve acted as chair of the Great Lake State Weekend and Events & Socials committees for several years, as well as vice president of the Alumni Association before being elected to president of the association in October of this year.
Since graduating, I have remained living and working in Sault Sainte Marie and I currently hold a position as a registered nurse in the emergency department at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault (formerly War Memorial Hospital) where I have now worked as a registered nurse for five years. During my senior year of nursing school, I completed an internship in the emergency department and decided that I loved it so much that I wanted to stay and work here after graduation.
In 2012, I met my husband Mike while home for summer vacation in Cheboygan and in 2014, we both moved to the Sault while finishing our degrees. We married in 2018 and welcomed our son Darrell to the world last year. My husband Mike is a 2017 mathematics graduate of Lake Superior State University and currently works for the Michigan Department of Transportation as a transportation technician, and periodically works as a freelance reporter. We have stayed active in the LSSU community, with our family frequently attending Laker athletic events and joined Lake State’s community band and choir.
Coming to Lake State for myself was an easy decision that was rooted in family tradition. My mother graduated from LSSC in 1984 with associate’s degrees in mental health and early childhood development as well as a bachelor’s degree in human services. I also had two aunts graduate from the nursing program at Lake State, one of whom is Margaret (Mugs) Pollard, who was a student athlete on the basketball, volleyball and softball teams and in 2018 was inducted into the Lake Superior State University Athletics Hall of Fame.
In closing, I would like to say that I am excited to be able to serve our alumni community as President of your Alumni Association. If you have any questions, comments or concerns or would like to learn more about our association, please feel free to reach out! We would love to have you on our team!
LSSU Alumni Board President
