Mark Bergsma ’77, Sault Ste. Marie, passed away on September 25, 2022. He earned his BA at Lake Superior State College and continued on to the University of Michigan for his Masters. Mark volunteers with the Peace Corps in Upper Volta and Zaire. 

Dr. James Bonner ’61, Birmingham, AL, passed away on August 13, 2022. He grew up in Sault Ste Marie, MI and attended Michigan College of Mining and Technology and the continued his education at the University of Michigan earning his degrees in Biophysics and Medicine.

George Bonovich ’68, De Pere WI, passed away on September 6, 2022. George earned his Bachelor’s Degree in teaching (drafting/architecture) from Lake Superior State. 

Elizabeth Brown ’72, Kinross, passed away on August 29, 2022. She graduated from Lake Superior State College in 1972. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, puzzle books, watching movies, coloring, and shopping.

Richard Callender ’85, Grand Rapids, passed away on September 20, 2022. Rich attended Brimley Area Schools and graduated in 1971. After serving in the military, he attended LSSU earning his degree and then accepted an engineering job with GE Aviation, formerly Smith Industries in Grand Rapids.

Wesley DeJong ’17, Sault Ste Marie, passed away on July 16, 2022. He graduated from Waterford Mott High School and the continued his education at LSSU where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management. While he attended LSSU, he worked as a student manager of Lake State’s Hockey which then led him to his dream job of being the equipment manager of the team.

Mallory Demers ’11, Manistique, passed away on October 31, 2022. She attended Bay de Noc Community College and obtained her Associates Degree in science before transferring to Lake Superior State University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Forensic Chemistry. 

Chase Ford ’18, Sault Ste Marie, passed away on August 3, 2022. He attended Bay Mills Community College before transferring to Lake Superior State where he continued to work towards his Engineering Degree.

Catherine Jensen Garcia ’00, Colorado Springs, CO, passed away on October 23, 2022. After graduating from Deckerville, she attended Lake Superior State University where she earned her degree in Criminal Justice. Catherin became a police officer in Port Sanilac and later worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections. 

Mary Green ’97, Austin, TX, passed away on May 13, 2022. She graduated from LSSU and was a longtime coordinator at the JKL Bahweting Anishnabe public school academy and helped families with their children’s education.

Galen Harrison ’56, Pickford, passed away on August 4, 2022. Galen attended Michigan Tech University in 1957 and earned his Masters in Electrical Engineering in 1961. In 1963 he started teaching at Lake Superior State University in the Department of Mathematics and retired in 1999, after nearly 40 years. 

Beverly Helfrich ’84, Cheboygan, passed away on July 23, 2022. She attended Lake Superior State University to further her business skills. 

Orvel “Jim” James Jacobson ’62, Durand, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2022. He worked for General Motors where he retired from after 26 years. 

James “Jim” Maki ’78, Sault Ste. Marie, passed away on October 15, 2022. After graduating from high school, he attended Lake Superior State College. After graduating with his bachelor’s he continued his education and graduated from Central Michigan University with his Masters in Chemistry.

James “Jim” McCall, Sault Ste. Marie, passed away on July 30, 2022. He started his career at Lake Superior State University in 1972 and in 2004, after 30 years, retired. Jim enjoyed playing softball in the employee recreational league. 

Scott Nason ’04, Sault Ste Marie, passed away on September 29, 2022. After he graduated from high school, he joined the United States Navy. Scott was honorably discharged and returned to Michigan and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, majoring in History. 

Karen Schlicher ’75, Escanaba, passed away on October 29, 2022. Karen attended Lake Superior State University and graduated with her BA in Sociology. In 1975, she moved on to Northern Michigan University to follow her dream to be a speech-language pathologist and graduated with a MA in Communication Disorders.

Jonathan “Jon” Stark ’97, Branch, passed away on October 13, 2022. Jon attend LSSU before transferring to West Shore Community College for Applied Arts and Sciences, completed a double Bachelors in Biology and Geology at Grand Valley State, then taught and earned his Masters in Geology at The Ohio State University. 

Jonathon Vasko ’03, Oden, passed away on October 23, 2022. Jonathon was a graduate of Houghton High School in 1999 and continued his education at Lake Superior State University while also enlisting in the United States Army.
