A lasting gift from Sault/Loretto High alumni benefiting Sault High graduates attending Lake State.
At this summer season ended, the Sault/Loretto High School Scholarship was a most fortunate recipient of contributions from reunion events of the Class of 1956, Class of 1962, and a special presentation from the Class of 1972 during their reunion dinner held on the campus of Lake Superior State University. In addition, LSSU received a very generous estate trust gift designated to the scholarship in memory of Sault High School Class of 1927 alumnus, John E. Brown. “We appreciate the local schools and the city where we grew up,” said Mimi Wirtanen, Class of 1972 reunion committee chair, “This was a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and to the university that many of us attended.”
Accumulated contributions of $5,000 or more create an annual perpetual scholarship in honor of an individual named by the donor, such as the Sault High Class of 1972 created with their recent contribution, and now they have their own named scholarship. The named perpetual scholarships are placed on the Wall of Honor plaque and presented to deserving seniors at the Sault Area High School Academic Awards in May. Up to ten perpetual named scholarships are awarded or renewed annually.
The Sault/Loretto High School Scholarship came to be in 1990 when a small group of community leaders, spearheaded by 1946 Sault High alumnus Demosthenes (Denny) Booth, gathered to talk about ways to help future Sault High graduates in their pursuit of a college education.
“The original committee roster read like a Who’s Who of Sault Ste. Marie at the time,” said Dr. Tom Robinson, who has served on the committee since its inception. “It was a wonderful idea of Denny Booth. His father planted a seed within his son, stating, if you leave the Soo and become successful, remember your hometown.”
In the 30+ years since its establishment, the Sault/Loretto High School Scholarship has reached an endowment level of over $500,000 and has provided a 4-year renewable scholarship to many deserving Sault High graduates attending Lake Superior State University. An amazing gift legacy from Sault High and Loretto High School alumni for generations to come!
