Gametime Genie Looks to Grow its Audience in Sports Betting Industry

Approximately $57.71 billion was legally bet on sports in the United States in 2021, a substantial increase from the $21.6 billion bet in 2020. Troy Smith, along with his company Gametime Genie, hope to find their niche in the booming field by providing data and statistics to help you make informed bets on sporting events via their custom algorithms.

An engineer for the last 28 years, Troy’s position was downsized and eventually lost at the start of the pandemic. His brother Chad, who was into sports gambling, asked Troy to help him pick football games. After achieving a high pick success rate for the second half of the NFL season, the brothers agreed that they could turn this idea into a business.

Troy’s background in engineering was a pivotal piece in helping the brothers launch Gametime Genie. The development of his custom algorithms were possible through the math skills Troy learned while studying to become an engineer at LSSU. Troy graduated in 1992 with a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology.

“I had a very positive experience at Lake Superior State University,” said Troy. “I love it up there. I originally went to college at DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago for Engineering. A year into that, one of my roommates attempted suicide and another roommate was a drug addict. I decided I wanted out of there and transferred to Lake Superior State University. I completed my degree up there and loved it.”

The name, Gametime Genie, comes from the site providing users with three daily wishes (three best bets of the day) from the Genie. These wishes are free on their website, reddit, and Facebook pages. The rest of the information is provided through a subscription based service. Gametime Genie offers weekly, monthly, quarterly, season, and yearlong subscriptions.

The company does not take any bets, or provide any live gambling. Instead the company provides information for individuals to make better educated picks for their bets across the four major US sports and horse racing. “We want to add more sports eventually,” said Troy. The most requested sports have been UFC and Golf. Troy also wants to expand to other social media platforms to gain visibility for the company.
