Paige Gordier ’88, has accepted a position at Alpena Community College as the Vice President of Instruction beginning July 1st.
Patrick Parker ’83, was named the 2023 Fire Chief of the Year, at the Annual Meeting of the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs.

Lee Rometti ’88, retired after finishing his 31st year of teaching. Rometti was a business and technology teacher at West Iron County High School. In his retirement. Rometti plans on enjoying his retirement relaxing and traveling on mission trips through his church.
Mark Terwilliger ’88, was promoted to full professor of computer science at the University of North Alabama (UNA) in 2019, was awarded the College of Business and Technology (COBT) Teacher of the Year in 2019, and the COBT Advisor of the Year in 2023. Has published 29 conference and journal articles in 7 years at UNA.

Katie (Hoy) Batten ’97, was inducted to the 2023 Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. The 51st annual induction banquet honored 10 athletes into the Hall of Fame. Batten was LSSU’s defensive player of the year in 1995-96 and female athlete of the year in the GLIAC Conference.

Nevin Buconjic ’94 & ’97, published his third book in June 2023 with his 9-year old daughter. Nevin has been mentoring and guiding Hannah since she started her first business, Hannah’s Summer Treats, at age five. Both Nevin and Hannah have been featured in various news media, including on national television speaking about youth entrepreneurship.

Chris Fink ’99, was promoted to full Professor in the Department of Health & Human Kinetics at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH. Chris has been a faculty member at Ohio Wesleyan since 2007, where he is also the co-director of the Public Health program.

Jennifer J. France ’98, has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. France was selected on the basis of current reference value. Many factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field were taken into account during the selection process.

Mark Schwiderson ’99, joined the General Motors Defense group in December 2022 working as the power electronics Design / release engineer responsible for batteries, power converters, equalizers and power conversion devices for all GM-D programs. He also currently volunteers with the City of Troy’s Fire Dept. and is a veteran of the Michigan Army National Guard.

Carrie Betts ‘ 01, the librarian for West Maple Elementary School, won the 2023 National School Library of the Year by the American Association of School Librarians. This prestigious award recognizes school libraries as a unique and essential part of their respective learning community.

Angeline Boulley ’01, author of “Fire Keepers Daughter,” was celebrated on July 1st at Rotary Park. Mayor Don Gerrie presented Boulley with a proclamation commemorating July 1, 2023 as Angeline Boulley Day and recognized her for being a notable and outstanding member of the community.

Amanda Matheson ’04, was appointed to the be the next Vice President of Administration and Finance at Ferris State University. Prior she was the Deputy Superintendent of Business Operations and Support Services for Grosse Pointe Public School System and Chief Financial Officer for Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Sarah Nelson ’05, is a 2023 Extraordinary Educator nominee. Nelson is currently a special education teacher at Crossroads Charter Academy in Big Rapids. Nelson was nominated by parent Joseph Bunker-Cass, whose children have been students of Nelson’s for six years.

Heidi Rife ’03, was a recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Part Time Awards. To receive consideration for the award, faculty were nominated by a colleague, student, or someone within the community. The main focus of this award is to acknowledge faculty’s commitment to education and excellence in service to others.
Capt. Matthew Smith ’00, was recently promoted to Captain at Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department. After graduating from Lake Superior State University, Captain Smith returned to the Sheriff’s Office and worked as a Corrections Deputy. Captain Smith was promoted in 2012 to the rank of Sergeant, where he worked as a shift supervisor. In 2019 Captain Smith was again promoted to the Jail Administrator position, where he held the rank of Lieutenant.

Trevor Adkins ’18, was given commendations in recognition of his lifesaving actions in the line of duty by Sault Police Chief Wesley Bierling and the city commission. Officer Adkins saved a man’s life by applying medical aid to the victim’s injured arm until the ambulance arrived.

Jamie Davison ’12, was announced as the new Director of Golf at Crystal Mountain. He attended Lake Superior State University and then later returned back as the head coach of the Division II Men’s Golf Team and first ever Women’s Golf Team.

Chelsea Immel ’19, was recognized for her first anniversary milestone in her company. She oversees a total of 10 stores, as Market Coordinator. She thanks all of those who helped and influenced her along the way.

Kevin Murdock ’14, is the first addition to the University of Wisconsin coaching staff for their hockey team. Murdock was a goalie for the Lakers and got into coaching after his playing career ended in 2015.

Kevin Palmer ’14, accepted and began a new position as Assistant Director for Esports & Intramural Sports at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He will have direct oversight for operations and logistics of Recreational Sports Intramural programs, and the Michigan Esport program.

Michael Smutny ’17, former Lake Superior State University basketball player helped his team win the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Smutny made the winning 3 point shot.

Raven Trammell ’14, moved to California shortly after graduating and is working in social media and video production, selling prints of his photos, and photographing concerts. His artwork has taken him to Tokyo, Toronto, Paris and New York to name a few.

Jaclyn Workentine ’15, was recognized as one of the horticulture industry’s brightest young trailblazers in the 40 under 40 honorees of 2023 presented by GPN magazine.

Maguire Sharpe ’23, is now working as an Inside Sales Representative for the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings with Ilitch Sports + Entertainment.
