LSSU Welcomes Spring With 54th Annual Snowman Burn

LSSU welcomed the new spring season with the 54th annual snowman burn on March 27th following a one-week delay due to high winds. The event featured remarks from Dr. Jamie Zamjahn, Interim Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success, Inter-Greek Council President Kiley Hoff, and a community poem read by LSSU Compass members. LSSU Fire Science students and the Sault Ste Marie Fire Department were on standby to ensure a safe and fun experience for the students, staff, and community members present. The snowman burning was followed by a continued celebration in the Galley with music and complimentary beverages and chicken wings for attendees.

This year’s snowman burn theme was “From Flakes to Flames,” inspired by an especially harsh winter and the community’s desire for renewal. In contrast to last year’s mild season—with little snowfall and warmer-than-usual temperatures—this winter was relentless. The brutal weather served as a reminder of the tradition’s origins, when the Unicorn Hunters student group first burned a snowman in hopes of fending off lingering snowstorms as spring approached.
