A Great Lake State Weekend and A Happy New Year!
Hello Lakers!
I hope that you are all having a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to a happy new year. As the year comes to a close, I would like to look back at this year’s Great Lake State Weekend, which was held in October. I was able to attend several of the events hosted on campus, including a press conference introducing Lake State’s new Athletic Director Tory Lindley, two Laker Hockey games, the Alumni Awards and Hall of Fame Ceremony, and the annual Great Lake State Weekend Tailgate.
I had such a wonderful time getting to help welcome alumni back to campus and celebrate their accomplishments, as well as greeting current students and their families and watching them all enjoy our beautiful campus and its community. Great Lake State Weekend is always a time that makes me reminisce about my time at Lake State and all the memories that I have made here.
During the Alumni Awards and Hall of Fame ceremony, I was able to enjoy listening to all the recipients speak so highly of their time at Lake State, but one speech that resonated with me was the one spoken by Mark Vermette (‘88). During his speech, Vermette spoke fondly of his time at Lake State, reminiscing about the small, family style community that he found in this University. He spoke of how families from the community would invite him and his teammates in for meals and how returning this year felt like coming home. He continued to speak about, how at Lake State, he “wasn’t just another number” and how the community felt “genuine” and “real.”
Vermette continued to speak on the fact that in his current career, he has reflected on the experiences that he had while at Lake State. He commented that he has used the community style recruiting techniques in his line of work as a city manager and how this “Lake State Recruiting Approach,” as he called it, helped him and his community to recruit a fire chief, stating that the fire chief’s wife was recruited even before the chief himself had accepted the job.
Listening to Vermette and several other award recipients speak of their time at Lake State and the influence it has had on their lives since reminded me of some of the many reasons that I am proud to be a Laker. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year.
