The School of Nursing kicked off a $600,000 campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the LSSU Nursing program during Great Lake State Weekend, with $425,000 already committed from a Lukenda Family Foundation matching grant of $300,000; $50,000 from former LSSU Nursing Director, Dr. Constance Baker; $50,000 from current Dean for the College of Health & Behavior, Kathy Berchem and her husband Steve Berchem; and $25,000 from Laker Alumni, Chuck and Laurie Schmidt.
Donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to the $300,000 matching grant through the end of 2022. As the Nursing program grows, so will needed funding for equipment and enhancing the student experience. The WMH/LSSU Superior Simulation Center is an innovative instructional program and learning center that provides challenging and immersive simulation training through the use of the latest simulation technologies for nurses, paramedics, public service agents, and other practicing professionals.
The first nursing education program at Lake Superior State University was initiated in September 1970 with a two-year Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program. The National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited the ADN Program from January 1983 until its closure. LSSU recognized the trend of entry into professional practice at the baccalaureate level and added the Bachelor of Science (BSN) Program in September 1974. This program was designed as a completion program for registered nurses seeking a baccalaureate degree. The first undergraduate students completing the program from the four-year BSN program was a total of 832 graduates.
