SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State hockey has released its full schedule for the 2021-22 season. The Lakers will play 26 conference games, eight nonconference games and one exhibition game to round out the 35 game schedule.

The Lakers will begin the 2021-22 season with back-to-back nonconference road series. Lake Superior State will open the season at Nebraska Omaha on Saturday, Oct. 2 and Sunday, Oct. 3. MARIE, Mich. – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the 2021 GLIAC All-Academic & Academic Excellence Teams.  74 student-athletes from Lake Superior State achieved academic honors, including 29 on the All-Academic teams and 45 on the Academic Excellence lists.  Read More.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association is proud to announce that the annual CCHA regular season champion will be awarded the prestigious MacNaughton Cup, known as the premiere trophy in collegiate hockey.

"We are thrilled to award the MacNaughton Cup to the CCHA regular season champions," CCHA Commissioner Don Lucia said. "The 40-pound handcrafted pure-silver trophy has been awarded to a college hockey champion since 1951 and we look forward to keeping the tradition alive in the CCHA. SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced today that the league has secured the rights to the Mason Cup and that the prestigious trophy will now be awarded to the CCHA Playoffs postseason tournament champion annually. With the Mason Cup joining the historic MacNaughton Cup as part of the CCHA family, the CCHA now has arguably the best trophy-tandem in collegiate hockey.

The Mason Cup is named after legendary Lake Superior State, Bowling Green State and Michigan State coach Ron Mason, whose name appeared on the trophy a league-high 13 times. Mason was instrumental in the establishment and success of the CCHA, helping it to grow into one of the most powerful college hockey conferences of all-time.  Read More

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) announced its 104-game conference schedule on Thursday. All eight CCHA teams will play a 26-game conference slate with the regular season champion being awarded the prestigious MacNaughton Cup, recognized as the premiere conference trophy in collegiate hockey.

CCHA conference action begins Friday, Oct. 8 when the University of St. Thomas faces-off against Northern Michigan University for a pair of weekend games in Marquette. The Tommies will be the quickest to play six conference games, spanning three-straight weekends from Oct. 8 - Oct.23. Read More

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) debuted its online home Monday. The new ccha.com website will provide fans seamless access to CCHA content with a focus on an user-friendly experience between computers, tablets and mobile devices everywhere.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State University Hockey Head Coach Damon Whitten has agreed to a multiyear contract extension. Whitten has agreed to terms on a six-year contract, solidifying the program through the 2027-28 season.

Whitten, who was named the 10th head coach in program history in April of 2014, has been dedicated to returning the program to prominence, leading the team to six Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) playoff appearances, including the program's first WCHA Championship in 2021. In addition, Whitten guided the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years during the 2020-21 season as well as the first Great Lakes Invitational championship in program history. In his seven seasons at Lake Superior State, Whitten has led the program to a 99-133-27 overall record. Read More

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Six Lake Superior State student-athletes received All-Conference honors as announced by Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) officials on Monday, April 12. On the men's team, Juho Kantola was named to the All-GLIAC First Team while Xavier Vicent Navarro was named to the All-GLIAC Second Team. Senior Seth Pinnoo received honorable mention honors. On the women's team, Nadege Koua and Milena Baigorria were both named to the All-GLIAC Second Team while Claudia Sole received honorable mention honors.

Kantola, a freshman from Tuusula, Finland, earned First Team All-Conference recognition in his first collegiate season after playing to a 6-3 overall singles record in the No. 1 singles spot. Kantola also played on the team's top doubles pair for the 2021 season and compiled a 3-6 record. In singles play, all of Kantola's matches either went to three sets or required a tiebreaker. One of the freshman's notable victories this season came on April 16 when he defeated Ferris State's Mathis Guerre, who was named GLIAC Male Player of the Year.  Read More

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams closed out the 2021 season at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7. The conference championship meet was hosted by Davenport University and took place at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Conference in Caledonia, Mich.

The women's team finished with 20 points, marking the program's highest total since the 2014 season when the team scored 25 points at the outdoor championship meet. The men's team finished with 19.5 points, marking the program's highest total since the 2017 season when the Lakers scored 23 points at the GLIAC Championships.  Read More

2020-2021 was an exciting year. It marked the inaugural season for our Men’s ACHA DII hockey team. With the help from everyone in the University, the team was able to take the ice safely. January 16th marked the first game for the team as they took on Adrian at home. Johnny Pianini scored the first goal of the inaugural season. The guys played very well in all of their games and the hard work finally paid off with their first win March 5th vs BGSU. They won that game 5-2.

With a new season approaching the Men’s program will be expanding into ACHA DIII. This means there will be two rosters needing to be completed. . So far, there are 16 new recruits with more still to come. The new players come from all over the US and Canada. Some notable additions for the DIII team are three locals. Alex French, Nick Sprague and Nick Gerrie will all be joining the squad after great high school careers.

As the recruiting process develops, the 2021-2022 season looks to be an exciting time for both teams.

2020-2021 was a year of growth. It marked the rebirth of the Women’s ACHA DII hockey team.   With the help from the University and everyone who has had a hand in our development along the way our programs were able to compete safely this season. Second semester provided us with our first games as we hit the road for a pair of contests at Adrian. The girls played awesome in all of their games and competed against many programs that are well established as we dove into the world of women’s college hockey!

With our sophomore season quickly approaching we will look to have roughly 20 new incoming freshmen female student-athletes from all over the U.S. and Canada. We will have a few notable local names. Maddie Hoornstra has chosen to stay home and attend LSSU for school and hockey. Her mother is a long-time employee. The Micolo twins, Kallen & Kensey, are staying home enrolling at LSSU while playing hockey. Lastly but certainly not least local Katie Robinson is transferring home from Aurora University where she was a member of the NCAA DIII team to continue her education and play here.

We’re excited for the future and the growth of women’s ACHA hockey. Next season is going to be huge for us, as we will be competing in the CCWHA.  Our home schedule will feature games against Notre Dame, Michigan State, Northern Michigan and Loyola

Laker Hockey season ticket holder Chris Weinreis still wanted to find a way to support the team despite not being able to attend games during the 2020-21 season. Chris decided to support the team by joining Laker Club and making a donation for every win during the 2021-21 campaign. After a 19-win season, and the first NCAA tournament appearance in 25 years, Chris ended up being a strong Laker Club supporter for the season.

His parents Larry and Patti Weinreis joined Laker Club and became season ticket holders as well. Chris was born in Sault Ste. Marie and his family still resides in Newberry, Michigan. Chris now lives in Waukesha, Wisconsin and when he cannot use his Laker tickets Chris’ parents bring other family and friends to the games.
