Professors
Ken Hatfield, Retired LSSU Geology Professor Kenneth Hatfield ‘46, entered eternal rest Tuesday, January 15, 2019 in Silver City, New Mexico. He was 97. Ken was born January 13, 1922 in Sebewa Township, Michigan to Lyle Henry and Nellie Mae Hatfield. He is survived by his loving wife Kyung-Ok of the family home; one son, Yul Chang; one daughter, Sunae Chang. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eldon Lowell Hatfield. A memorial service was celebrated January 22 at Terrazas Funeral Chapels.
Gerald Weatherby, Oklahoma City, Okla., died December 24, 2018 at the age of 78. Gerald was born in Neodesha, Kan. After receiving his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Kansas, he began his teaching career as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Lake Superior State University.

William Apfel '62, Barre Town, Vt., died January 27. William was born in Alba and attended Bellaire Public Schools. He played basketball for LSSC and then for Central Michigan University. After college he worked in his family’s construction business for about ten years, until he was called into the ministry. After earning a degree at Faith Tech Bible College William served parishes in East Jordan, Central Lake, Mitchell, SD and Barre, Vermont.
Duane Bowler '64, Curtis, died December 20, 2018 at the age of 72. Duane was a graduate of Newberry High School. He resided in Mt. Clemens and was employed at Chrysler for 15 years and later in Otisville where he was employed at General Motors for an additional 17 years retiring as a supervisor in 1998 and moving to Curtis. He was a 4-H leader, life member of the V.F.W. Post #6030 and a supporter and volunteer of the Newberry Youth Wrestling Association. He enjoyed playing cards, attending and supporting his grandchildren at their sporting events and an avid outdoorsman of hunting, fishing and pumpkin harvesting from the planting to harvest and sales.
Donald Paul Byron ’66, Sault Ste. Marie, died January 22 at the age of 71. Paul enjoyed many years being part of the “Pit Crew” for Team Chippewa, and playing for the Soo Mohawks Hockey team.
Janet (Weir) Elliot '88, Charlevoix, died December 12, 2018 at the age of 81. Janet was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. She retired from the Chippewa County Clerk’s Office after a full career as a court reporter.
John Graham, Sault Ste. Marie, died on August 5, 2017 at the age of 84. John was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. John and his family opened The Wicked Sister in January 2015 and it remains in the family with John's granddaughter, Cathy, as owner.
Peter P. Konyha '47, Port Washington, Wisc., died October 18, 2017 at the age of 91. Peter was honorably discharged from the United States Army after having served for a couple years. He earned his engineering degree at Michigan State University.
Gary Korman '61, Fennville, died on November 17, 2018 at the age of 79. Gary taught at Fennville public schools for 23 years. His favorite hobby was making wooden bird carvings. He was an avid golfer in his younger years, he enjoyed watching and playing hockey, and he loved to watch his grandchildren play baseball.
Krista Groh '96, Bay City, died unexpectedly January 20 at the age of 51. She was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. Krista worked as a registered nurse in the Saginaw/Bay City area. She was gifted in music, singing and acting and had been involved in various community theater groups. She enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, writing poetry, camping, warm beaches and camping. A memorial service in Sault Ste. Marie is being planned for some time in August 2019.
John Halamar ‘52, Alger, died June 15, 2017 at the age of 83. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from skilled trades at Bay City Powertrain.
Judd Howson '71, Sault Ste. Marie, died December 29, 2018 at the age of 68. Judd attended Sault High School. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, travelling, and spending time with his family.
Audrey (LeBlanc) Lyons '68, Sault Ste. Marie, died on December 27, 2018 at the age of 92. Audrey and her husband raised a family of 11 children in Bay Mills. She taught school in Sault Ste. Marie until she retired and pursued a career in feeding senior citizens as the director of the Elders Program at Bay Mills.
Roger Maes '74, Geneseo Ill., died January 20 at the age of 62. He graduated from Richmond High School in Richmond, MI, and attended Lake Superior State College and Michigan State University, where he received his bachelor's degree.
Arthur Pearce ’57, Redford, died on May 28, 2016. Dave was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
Bernice Scozzafave ’69, Brimely, died January 18 at the age of 72. Bernice taught high school from 1971 to 2006. She was a member of the Christopher Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, and St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Bay Mills.
Arthur Ernest Utecht, Sault Ste. Marie, died February 2 at the age of 94. Arthur attended school in Munising and upon graduation served in the U.S. Naval Service during World War ll. He moved to Sault Ste. Marie following his service in the Navy in 1946. Here, he me the love of his life and spent 68 cherished years with her.
