Lake Superior State Hockey Announces 2020-21 Season Schedule

Lake Superior State hockey, in conjunction with the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), has released its schedule for the 2020-21 season.

The Lakers schedule consists of 25 games total, including seven non-conference meetings and 18 conference games. All contests will be played against WCHA opponents this season, including the non-conference matches. Non-conference play will begin on Saturday, Nov. 21 when the Lakers host the Michigan Tech Huskies in a weekend series. The Lakers non-conference play will conclude on Monday, Dec. 7 following a home series against Alabama-Huntsville. Read more.

Central Collegiate Hockey Association Unveils New Conference Logo

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), the new NCAA Division I men's hockey conference that begins play in October 2021, introduced its new logo. The new CCHA logo is a bold, distinctive interpretation of each of the CCHA letter forms, underlined by a hockey stick using Red and Blue colors, a classic hockey palette. The logo was designed by Bosack & Co., one of the country's leading college branding firms. The new CCHA logo is also available in each member school's own colors, which offers an opportunity for the institutions to further embrace the relationship between the CCHA and each school's hockey program. GLIAC Council of Presidents Suspends All Sports Competition Through End of Calendar Year

Following a thorough evaluation of all COVID-19 risks and safety protocols, and numerous meetings involving various GLIAC governance groups, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to suspend all sports competition until Jan. 1, 2021. The Lake Superior State club softball team concluded the fall portion of its season

The Lake Superior State club softball team concluded the fall portion of its season with three exhibition losses Sunday at Michigan State. The Spartans, who were ranked fourth in the NCSA national poll when COVID-19 struck last spring, swept the Lakers 8-1, 15-0 and 16-1 at Ranney Park. The games were played in a scrimmage format with unlimited substitution. “The first game was decent, and MSU overpowered us in the other two,” LSSU coach Linda Bouvet said. “We gave up only five earned runs in the opener and went seven innings against a very strong opponent. LSSU Pep Band

LSSU Pep Band Update

Despite the challenges brought upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic, this semester has brought significant and exciting changes to the pep band. As of the fall of 2020, the LSSU Pep Band is now considered a sort of "hybrid club sport". This places the band under the department of club sports, which means that the band has a stronger, more direct connection with the university, allowing the band to have more access to resources and an improved ability to coordinate for events, both athletic and non-athletic. This new, tight relationship will allow the pep band a tool to succeed, as well as provide the university with a stronger, prouder pep band. Read more.

Ruthann Cantile Named Director of Club Sports

As Director of Club Sports her goal is to bring exposure to the University and comb the region looking for the most qualified coaches and student-athletes that fit the culture of LSSU. By cultivating strong relationships and creating a bond with these folks awareness, participation, pride, and funding become present and strengthen the community. For the 2020-2021 season the first two sports we are offering are Men's and Women's Hockey and plan to add two new teams every year for the next 5 years. Soon we will announce the sports teams LSSU will endorse in 2021-2022. Read more.

LSSU Hires Club Hockey Coaching Staff

Steven Kaunisto was named Head Coach of the men's program and he will also assist the women's hockey program with scouting, recruiting, campus visits, and practice planning execution.

Matthew Parker was named Head Women's Hockey Coach and likewise will also assist the Men's program with scouting, recruiting, campus visits, and practice planning execution. Read more.
