Tom Borrelli, wrestling head coach, (1986-91) from Mount Pleasant, Michigan
Tom Borrelli has distinguished himself as one of the most highly respected names in collegiate wrestling. His head coaching career began at LSSU in 1986 following two years as an assistant coach at Clemson, where he earned a master’s degree in education administration and supervision.
His Laker teams made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances and led his team to a seventh-place finish in 1991, tying the highest ranking of a wrestling team in school history. Borrelli’s team success that year included a dual-meet record of 15-2 and his overall record at Lake State was 46-25-1. He earned the GLIAC Coach of the Year Award in 1991.
For team success to occur it requires outstanding performances by its leaders. Borrelli’s success in nurturing leaders was evident by him coaching seventeen NCAA top-10 finishers including NCAA runner-ups Robert Symanns (1989) and Randy Sieler (1988). These are enduring relationships as Coach Borelli presented Sieler for his Laker Hall of Fame induction in 2018. Hall of Famer Jason Bingaman (2005) was recruited and coached for one season by Borelli adding to his enduring legacy here.
His next stop was a head coaching position at Central Michigan University where he built upon his record at LSSU resulting in a career head coaching record of 375-176-8, a .677 win percentage. He earned his 300th career dual victory in leading CMU to a 49-0 win over Sacred Heart on Dec. 17, 2011.
Borelli has coached one national champion, 44 All-Americans, nine MAC Wrestler of the Year honorees, 88 MAC champions, 160 national qualifiers, 55 NWCA All-Academic individuals, 73 Academic All-MAC selections, 10 wrestlers who have earned the MAC Freshman of the Year Award and two Academic All-Americans.
He and his wife Lorri reside in Mount Pleasant. They have two sons, Bob and Jason, both whom wrestled at CMU. Jason has served as the head coach at Stanford since 2008-09.
Becky Marquardt-King ’07, women’s basketball, (2002-2006) from Shawano, WI
Becky Marquardt-King attended Lake Superior State University and was a member of the women’s basketball team from 2002-2006. She currently ranked fourth on the all-time points list with 1,598 and one of 21 players in Laker history to score more than 1,000 career points.
During Marquardt-King’s freshman season she had a .658 field goal percentage, which ranks as fourth all-time in a season. The team finished as GLIAC North Division Champions and GLIAC Tournament Champions.
In her sophomore season, Marquardt-King had a .625 field goal percentage which ranks as seventh all-time in a season. The team returned as GLIAC North Division Champions, GLIAC Tournament Champions, and was a NCAA Great Lakes Regional Finalist.
Marquardt-King continued to improve on the court and during her junior season in 2004-05, she was named to the All-GLIAC First Team. The team would once again finish as GLIAC North Division Champions.
During her senior season she would return to the All-GLIAC First Team. Marquardt-King was named the McPherson Female Athlete of the Year and women’s basketball MVP in 2006. That season she was the Lakers top scorer with 544 points in 29 games for an average of 18.8 ppg, ranking fourth all-time in Lakers single-season scoring. Her 18.8 points per game average in 2005-06, ranks fifth all-time among Lakers while her .711 field goal percentage, ranks first all-time.
Anthony Pavicic ’07, track (2002-2007) & cross country (2002-2006) from Shelby Township, MI
Anthony Pavicic is from Shelby Township, Michigan and was a member of the LSSU track team from 2002-2007, and the cross country team from 2002-2006. He was named to the All-GLIAC track team on six different occasions in the mile, 3,000, and 1500. Pavicic is a three-time NCAA National Qualifier (1 time indoor and 2 times outdoor). He was also an All-American Honorable Mention in 1500 meters at 2006 Outdoor NCAA National Meet in Emporia, KS, where Pavicic finished 9th. Upon graduation from LSSU, he held 6 school records. Ten years later, 4 still stand:
- Mile run 4:09.44 at CMU on February 17, 2006
- 3k Run 8:24.80 at LSSU’s SAC – lapped the entire field – February 28, 2006
- Member of 4 x 800 relay record team, 7:57 at SVSU
- Outdoor 1500 meters 3:50.68 at North Central College in Illinois, May 2005
Pavicic has been using his LSSU degree in Business Education as a high school teacher at Sterling Heights High School. He has been the head cross country coach there since 2008 and has won the MAC Coach of the year both in 2009 and 2015. His teams have won the MAC Blue dual meet championship twice. He has sent many athletes to the MHSAA State Meet. In 2010, he coached one of his athletes to a 2:22 800 school record and she went on to compete at Michigan State University.
Megan (LaMothe) Schwab ’09, women’s tennis, (2004-2008) from Charlotte, NC
Megan (LaMothe) Schwab finished her four-year tennis career as the most accomplished women’s tennis player in the program’s history. She finished her collegiate career with 54 wins in singles, a .692 winning percentage, and a winning record each season.
“Being the all-time wins leader at LSSU wouldn’t have been possible without my doubles partner,” said Megan. “The chemistry that Alex (Chiakmakis) and I were able to establish over the three years we played together was a big part of me being inducted into the Hall of Fame.”
Megan was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention in 2005, and to the All-GLIAC First Team in 2006 and 2007. She was a member of the Lakers NCAA Tournament Teams in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, it was the first time the Lakers women’s tennis team ever qualified.
Additionally, she earned GLIAC All-Academic team honors from 2005-08 and was a two-time recipient of the Bud Cooper Endowment Award in 2006 and 2007. She received the Deb McPherson Female Athlete of the Year Award and the women’s tennis MVP for the 2007-08 season.
She spent one season as an assistant coach in 2009 while she finished her degree.
Megan is currently a Senior Manager/Consulting Risk Management Leader with Elliot Davis. Her overall focus is the design and maintenance of quality control policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable professional standards, regulatory requirements, and the firm’s quality control standards.
She and her husband Troy ’09, reside in Charlotte, NC, with their three children, Brayden (5), Jaxson (3), Mason (4 Months).
“I am extremely excited and honored to be inducted into the LSSU Athletic Hall of Fame,” said Megan. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the support from my family and teammates. I was fortunate enough to play with some amazing teammates. Celina Grondin, Sophie Bedard, Megan Smith, Alex Chiakmakis, Carolyn Pumford, Weronika Lomacka, and Lindsay Adams were all there when we made Lake State history by qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championships. We were best friends on and off the court, which made playing together that much more fun. Another special teammate was Kelli Hammond. She was a senior who really helped me adjust to college and college athletics during my freshman year. I am so thankful that Jon Coles gave me the opportunity to play tennis at Lake State. I was able to meet my husband and life-long friends as a result of this opportunity. This is something that I will never forget.”
Sean Tallaire ’96, hockey, (1992-1996) from St. Ignace, MI
Sean Tallaire was a member of the Laker hockey team from 1992-1996, currently ranking fourth all-time in career points with 207 (103G, 104A) in 171 games played. His career goals rank second all-time, while his career assists place him seventh all-time. In his freshman season, Tallaire was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team, helping the team reach the NCAA Finals.
Tallaire would lead the Lakers in assists (32) and points (55) during the 1993-94 season. That season the team advanced to win the Lake State’s third NCAA Championship. He was named the NCAA Tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament Team.
In the 1994-95 season, the Lakers reached the NCAA Quarterfinals. Tallaire was named NCAA All-Region and All-CCHA Honorable Mention.
In his final season with the Lakers in 1995-96, Tallaire served as assistant captain. He finished the season being named to the All-CCHA First Team, an NCAA All-American and the team’s Most Valuable Player. The team lost out in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Tallaire was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the eighth round (202 pick) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He played 14 seasons of professional hockey in the IHL, AHL and DEL.
He currently works at First National Bank of St. Ignace in BSA/Compliance. In the position he works with debit card fraud and online banking. In addition to this position, he is also a scout for Neutral Zone and the Northeast Generals of the NAHL.
Sean has two sons, Carter (21) and Chase (17).
