Paul M. Ganz ’78, a political science/history graduate and 1977 Student Senate president, recently visited several Abraham Lincoln sites in Springfield, Illinois, with his wife, Dr. Mary Ellen McLean, a University of Michigan professor emerita, retired dentist and retired U.S. Air Force colonel. Paul reports that his “I Like Ike” hat drew a few smiles—and one unforgettable question from a young visitor: “Who’s Ike?” Some things, apparently, are worth remembering.

Paul Martin ’74 recently participated in a “Show Your College Colors” gathering at Verena at the Glen, his 55+ living community in Glen Allen, Virginia. Dean’s 80th birthday on October 9, and he’s been reflecting on his years at Lake Superior State College.
“I graduated in 1973–74, making me a ‘Golden Grad,’ and remained connected to LSSC from 1974 to 1980, when I served as the Virginia representative on campus, taking over for Gene Bays. My office was in the basement of the Cisler Center,” Martin commented. “My wife and I also lived in Marquette Hall, the married student housing, from 1971 to 1974.”
“I remember my LSSC years fondly, especially the hockey games, where the Vets’ Club sold popcorn and 50/50 tickets. I’m grateful for all the memories, friendships, and connections from those years. LSSC will always hold a special place in my heart.”
The U.P. Sports Hall of Fame announced on August 8 that Don Carlson ’97 will be inducted as a member of its 2027 class. A graduate of Kingsford High School, Carlson played four years of basketball at Lake Superior State University, where he was a standout player for the Lakers.

Tracy McDonald ’10, Rochester, MI, a 2010 graduate of Lake Superior State University, has joined JTS Health Partners (JTS) as Strategic Sales Executive | HIM Solutions. Bringing more than a decade of healthcare sales and business development experience, McDonald will focus on building client relationships, identifying new business opportunities and driving growth across JTS’s health information management (HIM) service lines. Her background includes helping hospitals, physician groups and ambulatory surgery centers address HIM needs such as medical coding compliance, education and staffing support. With a strong track record in healthcare revenue integrity and a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from LSSU and Master of Business Administration, McDonald brings extensive industry expertise to her new role.

Michael Perkins ’13, has been promoted to uniform sergeant at the Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost. A 2013 graduate of LSSU’s criminal justice program, Perkins previously served as a trooper in Manistique and has returned to lead operations at the state’s only MSP outpost.
Established in 2019, the Manistique Outpost is a unique hybrid model that operates as its own MSP worksite while receiving support from the Gladstone Post. Unlike a traditional detachment, the outpost allows troopers to be assigned directly to Manistique, helping provide consistent law enforcement coverage throughout Schoolcraft County. As sergeant, Perkins will oversee outpost operations and support the troopers serving the community he has long called home.

Jessica (Keilholtz) Derenzy ’15, has been named K–8 Principal at Les Cheneaux Community Schools in Cedarville, MI. Derenzy has served as a math teacher at Les Cheneaux for the past 10 years, building strong relationships with students and earning a reputation for her leadership, dedication, and commitment to student success. Her transition to principal represents a move from teaching individual classes to helping guide the broader K–8 educational experience.
