LSSU Alumni Recognized for Preserving History in the Soo

LSSU alumni Danna ’88 and Terry ’87 Sanderson have been two amongst many business owners in Sault Ste. Marie in the past 36 years. However, their commitment to the community’s history sets them apart, and they were recognized for that commitment this past June.

The Chippewa County Historical Society presented the Sandersons with a Historic Preservation Award for renovating the former John Quinn Eagle Saloon building on Ashmun Street while maintaining its historical charm. The saloon is now a specialty gift store with an Airbnb above it.

We learn the history of any building we buy. And we try to maintain the historical architecture in any way that we possibly can. We have found that is resonates people tremendously. People notice it an appreciate it and then comment on it,” Danna Sanderson said in a statement to 9&10 news.

She and Terry, who met at LSSU and later married, believe it is important for small businesses to maintain a historical perspective. For this reason, they have purchased and renovated several properties over the years, including an old church they converted into an Airbnb in 2023. Each building is modernized in a way that ensures it is sound and functional, while also preserving its historical character as much as possible.
