Captain Scott LaBonte ’99, Sault Ste. Marie, was reappointed to the Michigan State Waterways Commission by Governor Whitmer this past August.
Captain LaBonte earned his Bachelor of Science in fire science from LSSU and is currently the general manager at Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours. Previously, he served as the Fire Chief for the City of Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department.
Captain LaBonte will serve on the commission as a person residing north of Townline 16 (mid-Lower Peninsula) in the Upper Peninsula from September 19, 2025 through September 18, 2028. As part of the commission, Captain LaBonte will be responsible for the acquisition, construction, and maintenance of recreational harbors, channels, docking and launching facilities, and administration of commercial docks in the Straits of Mackinac.
This is Captain LaBonte’s second appointment since succeeding former commission member Patrick Egan in 2022. His appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Michigan Senate.
