LSSU’s men’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 Midwest Regional Semifinal in the NCAA Division II tournament, for the first time in Laker history this spring in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Lake Superior State (LSSU) basketball program (23-8) danced their way to the Regional Championship game after a thrilling 88-80 victory over the Upper Iowa Peacocks (22-10) on Sunday, March 17th. Unfortunately, the Lakers fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs (28-7) in the closing moments of the Midwest Regional Championship in a hard-fought game by a final score of 86-81 on Tuesday, March 19th.
LSSU hosted a watch parties at Taffy Abel Arena on the jumbotron on March 17th, and in the Cisler Center Galley on March 19th, sponsored by LSSU Student Affairs, to watch the Lakers in the post-season play. The LSSU team was given a warm welcome back to Sault Ste Marie by students and community members on March 20th, and both Coach Steve Hettinga and sole senior player Xander Okerlund took to the podium to reflect on the past season.
