Ruth Atkinson Ruth Atkinson of Sault Ste. Marie died October 14 at the age of 87. Ruth was the head cook at LSSU for many years, and would even return to cook for special events after her retirement.

Laurine Kelly Laurine Kelly ’91 of Sault Ste. Marie died November 7 at the age of 71. She worked for many years at the Learning Center and as the coordinator of LSSU’s Elders program.

Eva Baker 79’ of Sault Ste. Marie died November 30 at the age of 89. She raised and adored three daughters with her husband of over 50 years. She ran her own catering business and was the kitchen manager at the Christopher Columbus Hall.

Julia E Bell '64 of Sault Ste. Marie died November 29 at the age of 72. She was an elementary teacher in Sault Ste. Marie and Alpena.

Walter Darrell Browder ’99 of Sault Ste. Marie died October 11 at the age of 45. He enjoyed the stories and artwork of comic books, listening to music, and developing his own computer game in the labs of LSSU.

Chester Steven Kasper Jr. ’55 of Cedarville died October 10 at the age of 82. He was the chief of the Clark Township fire department for 43 years, sang in his church’s choir for 60 years, and raised 4 kids with his wife of more than 60 years.

Joan B. Long of Tomah, Wis. died November 12 at the age of 77. She worked as an EMT for 25 years in Tomah, raised 2 sons with her husband of 49 years, and loved taking care of her grandchildren.

Margaret “Betty” Lyon ’47 of Wheaton, Ill. died September 14 at the age of 91. She and her husband loved to travel often; making trips to France, Italy, and Germany. They also lived in Australia and twice in London. She worked as a teacher’s aide in Wheaton, and raised her children.

Steve Robert Malone ‘83 of Pontiac died October 2 at the age of 61.

Anthony P. Marietti ’88 of Portage died September 8 at the age of 54.

Elizabeth Anne Money ’98 of Kalamazoo died suddenly June 26 at the age of 46.

Janice Nowicki ‘95 of Alpena died October 10 at the age of 68. She had graduated from LSSU with magna cum laude 4.0 honors.

Carl Piippo ’48 of Grand Rapids died August 7 at the age of 92. He served in the Army Air Corp. during WWll in the South Pacific from 1944-1946. With a deep love for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, he and his wife raised two daughters in the Sault.

Dale Rye Reich ’50 of Cedarville died October 4 at the age of 87. Shortly after 1953, he was stationed in Germany with the US Army, with his wife and daughter. After returning to the States he worked hard to support his wife and seven children.

Karen R Stephenson ’69 of York, Penn. died October 14 at the age of 70. She was born in Germany, but her family moved to Sault. Ste Marie when she was 5. She and her husband of 49 years were married on the same day as their college graduation from LSSU; they raised three children together.

Scott Suneson ’93 of Sarasota, Fla. died May 25 at the age of 64. He was a man of many talents; a carpenter, writer, fisherman, and golfer. He was involved with the fundraising for the Northern Lights Arena and in building new soccer fields.
