He chose to put his skills to work in the Sault area, taking a position as an environmental technician with the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan through the MI Healthy Climate Corps. His work involves helping tribes reduce pollution and collect data on greenhouse gas emissions, with the broader goal of supporting Michigan&#8217;s efforts to achieve economy-wide carbon neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3298 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/Inter-Tribal-Center-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Inter Tribal Center \" width=\"208\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/Inter-Tribal-Center-logo.jpg 208w, https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/Inter-Tribal-Center-logo-100x76.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The MI Healthy Climate Corps operated under the AmeriCorps umbrella. However, when federal funding for AmeriCorps was cut in April 2025, the Climate Corps program also lost its funding. Members like Lucas were instructed to stop working at the end of April. Some projects resumed in June, when the state of Michigan stepped in to offer stipends to members who wanted to continue until their terms ended in mid-October.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3278 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/MHCF_Logo-1024x663-1-300x194.png\" alt=\"rebranded MI Healthy Climate Fellows program\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/MHCF_Logo-1024x663-1-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/MHCF_Logo-1024x663-1-768x497.png 768w, https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/MHCF_Logo-1024x663-1-100x65.png 100w, https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/MHCF_Logo-1024x663-1-864x559.png 864w, https:\/\/lakerlog.lssu.edu\/summer2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/09\/MHCF_Logo-1024x663-1.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this state support, most corps members have remained in their roles as part of the rebranded MI Healthy Climate Fellows program.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1316\" data-end=\"1375\">For Lucas \u2014 who had planned to continue working with the Inter-Tribal Council in a different role if his position was cut \u2014 the choice to stay on was an easy one. He is now continuing his work as a climate fellow, and with the help of state funding, the MI Healthy Climate Fellows program is expected to continue into 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lucas Roff graduated from LSSU with a degree in biology in 2023.
