Lake Superior State University Names Veteran Collegiate Athletics Executive And Michigander David L. Diles Its New Athletic Director<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Lake Superior State University has selected veteran collegiate athletics executive and Michigan native David L. Diles as its new director of athletics after conducting a national search. He succeeds Dr. David Paitson, who earlier resigned after four years to accept an assistant professor of sport management position at University of Indianapolis. Diles begins at LSSU on Aug. 2, 2021, and will oversee 11 Div. II teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and a Div. Lake Superior State University recently renewed its long-standing annual tuition agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, MI. The collaboration, dating to 2009, encourages active duty personnel, their spouses, and dependents to pursue higher education at LSSU by lowering the cost of study to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cannabis Center Of Excellence At Lake Superior State University Installs New Equipment That Expands Reach Within the Industry And Beyond<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The trailblazing Cannabis Center of Excellence (CCoE) at Lake Superior State University recently upgraded its cannabis analysis instrumentation in ways that benefit not only the burgeoning industry but also environmental science. The newly installed Agilent 1290 Infinity II UHPLC and Ultivo QQQ mass spectrometer, in conjunction with the repurposing of existing equipment Agilent 6470 QQQ, allows CCoE to analyze residual pesticides and mycotoxins in cannabis products and the Center for Freshwater Research and Education at LSSU to identify persistent pollutants such as perfluoroalkoxy alkanes (PFAs).<\/span><\/p>\n

Lake Superior State University Center for Freshwater Research and Education Students Reel in Big Honors<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Four Lake Superior State University students working at LSSU\u2019s Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE) this summer were recently awarded prestigious funding from Michigan Sea Grant and Trout Unlimited to support undergraduate research on projects that will enhance fisheries management and invasive species control as well as <\/span>address water pollution. <\/span>Elizabeth Belanger, a conservation biology major, was awarded a Michigan Sea Grant Environmental Internship and plans to conduct research on lake sturgeon and their <\/span>habitats in the St. Marys River, using an aquatic remotely operated vehicle equipped with water quality sensors. Her research will focus on locating both adult and sub-adult lake <\/span>sturgeon and linking those locations with water quality and habitat data to help inform conservation of this ecologically and culturally important species. <\/span>Tristan Compton, a conservation biology major, was also awarded a Michigan Sea Grant Environmental Internship.
