Dr. Jason Garvon Appointed to Michigan Wildlife Council<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Lake Superior State University proudly announces that Dr. Jason Garvon, professor of biology and advisor to the LSSU Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, has been appointed to the Michigan Wildlife Council. A resident of Brimley, Dr. Garvon brings a wealth of experience and commitment to conservation and outdoor heritage to the role.<\/p>\n

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Dr. Garvon\u2019s appointment, which begins April 25 2025, and continues through March 31, 2029. He will serve as a representative of individuals who regularly purchase hunting or fishing licenses, having done so each year for the past three years, and was recommended by a statewide sportsmen's organization.<\/p>\n

Dr. Garvon is a past member of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Citizens Advisory Council and holds degrees from Northern Michigan University (B.S. in ecology, M.S. in biology) and a Ph.D. in wildlife science from Texas A&M University. His appointment succeeds Nicholas Buggia, whose term recently concluded.<\/p>\n

The Michigan Wildlife Council was established to educate the public about the importance of wildlife conservation and to highlight the vital role hunters and anglers play in maintaining Michigan\u2019s natural heritage.<\/p>\n

Dr. Garvon\u2019s appointment is pending confirmation by the Michigan Senate.<\/p>\n

LSSU Fisheries and Wildlife Students Make Strong Showing at Statewide Wildlife Conference<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Seven fisheries and wildlife students from Lake Superior State University, along with faculty members Dr. Dustin Brewer and Dr. Jill Witt, attended the Michigan Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS) Annual Meeting in Gaylord on March 19\u201320. This year marked LSSU\u2019s largest showing at the event in over a decade. Students Kylah Buikema, Torin Miller, Lauren Schagel, and Katie VanWormer presented posters showcasing their research, while Maddy Olson, Secretary of the LSSU Fisheries and Wildlife Club, provided an update on the university\u2019s TWS Student Chapter activities. Additionally, five students participated in a hands-on workshop focused on wildlife trapping methods and ethics. The event offered valuable opportunities for students to engage with current research, develop professional skills, and network with others in the field.<\/p>\n

Prof. Adam St. John Cast in Michigan Shakespeare Festival\u2019s Summer Season<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Assistant Professor Adam St. John was cast as a company member with the Michigan Shakespeare Festival. This summer's lineup includes \"Much Ado about Nothing\", \"Richard III\",
\nand a new adaptation of \"The Beaux' Stratagem\". Adam will be performing in all three shows, which will run at the Hillberry Gateway Theatre in Detroit from July 5 through August 9. More information and tickets can be found by clicking here<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

LSSU Replaces Old Signage on Steam Plant<\/strong><\/p><\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The steam plant, located in the southwest corner of campus, received a facelift this spring in the form of new signage. The old lettering on the side of the plant (top photo) was taken down before the project was briefly paused due to warming temperatures. The melting snow and oversaturated ground posed a temporary instability issue under equipment being used on the hillside. The new signage (bottom photo) has since been completed, and includes the university's name and an anchor in LSSU's signature logo arrangement.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n
