Board Recognizes Outgoing Trustee Doug Bovin<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n
\n

President Peter Mitchell joins LSSU's Board of Trustees in issuing a formal proclamation that recognizes outgoing member Doug Bovin (left, center) for eight years of service. The presentation was made during his last board meeting, held Jan. 26 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Bovin's tenure saw the formal launch of LSSU's Center for Freshwater Research and Education in 2016; the construction and 2017 dedication of R.W. Considine Hall; and, into 2018, a spike in admissions to Lake State. Governor Rick Snyder has appointed Richard Barch, second from right, to an eight-year term to take Bovin's place on the governing board. Mitchell won the honor by being top-bidder, along with staff accountant Craig Krouth, on a silent auction at this past summer\u2019s Lake State Golf Classic<\/a> that benefits Laker Club<\/a> and LSSU Foundation operations. Academic Quality Yields Free Shot At Major Accounting Exam<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

If February awards mean anything, members of Accounting Club should pass April\u2019s Certified Management Accounting (CMA) exam with flying colors. Based upon academic qualifications, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), which offers the prestigious credential, presented the LSSU students with awards that waive the exam\u2019s registration and study material fees. The scholarship offers a three-year membership in the IMA as well. Front, left to right with hometown info are Karly VanderMolen (Schoolcraft, Mich.), Alyssa Rose (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Kellie Johnson (Irons, Mich.), Nicole Wymore (Sault Ste Marie, Mich.), and Emily Chartrand (Brimley, Mich.). Student Raises Funds and Awareness for Epilepsy<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n
\n

Student Laura LaJoie (pictured right holding the check) presents a check to the LSSU Foundation to benefit the Leah Marie Bollin Memorial Award<\/a> that provides scholarships to students with epilepsy or other seizure disorders. To bring awareness and a better understanding for those afflicted with Epilepsy, Laura gave presentations on campus, held a bake sale and organized an Epilepsy Awareness Walk-A-Thon at the James Norris Events Center.<\/p>\n

    Saginaw Bay Walleye Club Scholarship Winners<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

    LSSU's own Fisheries and Wildlife Management<\/a> students Sarah McNichol (l) and Carrie Coy have landed two of only six $750 scholarships from Lower Michigan\u2019s Saginaw Bay Walleye Club<\/a> (SBWC). The club is one of dozens from throughout the Midwest that come to the St. Mary\u2019s River every August for the Michigan Walleye Tour<\/a> (MWT). The LSSU Fisheries & Wildlife Club<\/a>, of which Coy and McNichol are members, contributes expertise to the tournament, which attracts hundreds of anglers to\u00a0Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The MWT and SBWC finance the scholarship as a way of giving back to the sport. McNichol, a sophomore from Richmond, Mich., is minoring in environmental science. Coy, who is pairing her major with a minor in geographical information systems (GIS), is a senior from Petoskey, Mich. She and five other LSSU students presented research Feb 13-14 at the Michigan chapter of the American Fisheries Society\u2019s annual meeting. The students also shared senior-theses work\u00a0at the 78th Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference held Jan. 28-31 in Milwaukee, Wis. Joining Coy and McNichol in this picture are, left to right, LSSU Fisheries & Wildlife Club officers Cole VanOosten, Will Marosi, and Riley Waterman.
