Laker Hockey in Canada<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

The Lake Superior State hockey team will play a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) game across the border at the GFL Memorial Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020 at 7:07 p.m. against the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers. This will be the first game played by the university in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and the first NCAA Division I men\u2019s game played in Canada since January 2012. Laker athletics will look to the event to serve as a celebration of the hockey history that the Twin Saults share as well as an opportunity to showcase the university to a Canadian audience. Volleyball Season Wrap-Up<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Laker volleyball wrapped up the 2019 season with a pair of conference matches at home during the weekend of Nov. 15 & 16. The Lakers would end the season with an 8-19 overall record, which continued the team\u2019s upward trend under third year Head Coach Dave Schmidlin. Despite a young team this year, the roster consisted of 17 underclassmen and four upperclassmen, Lake State\u2019s eight wins were the most in program history since the 2011 season. The Lakers went on a four-game win streak in the month of October which included a perfect 3-0 record at the Midwest Crossover Tournament. The Lakers capped off their season with a home match against Northern Michigan and would honor their two graduating seniors, Caitlyn Kane and Amanda Reid, in a post-game ceremony. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

Women\u2019s Tennis Players Receive All-Conference Honors <\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n
\n

Three members of the Lake State women\u2019s tennis team received All-GLIAC Honors following the end of the 2019 season. Junior AlexiAnn Drouin was named to the All-GLIAC First Team, sophomore Nadege Koua was named to the All-GLIAC Second Team and junior Muskaan Ranjan was named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team. Drouin, who played at the No. 1 single spot for the Lakers, finished the 2019 season with a 6-3 overall record. Koua posted a 7-2 record in the No. 2 singles spot while Muskaan Ranjan, who competed for the Lakers in the No. 3 singles spot after joining the team as a transfer student, totaled a 5-3 singles record. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

\u201cThank You Mayor Tony\u201d Night<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n

During the Nov. 2 Laker hockey game against Ferris State, the Lake State Athletic Department held a \u201cThank You Mayor Tony\u201d night for long-time Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Tony Bosbous. The Lakers honored Anthony \u201cTony\u201d Bosbous with a special pregame tribute to him on the ice which included a ceremonial puck drop. Bosbous was also presented with a Laker jersey by Sault Ste. Marie native Ashton Calder, a sophomore forward on the team, and Head Coach Damon Whitten had the mayor read the starting lineup to the players in the locker room. Mayor Bosbous graduated from Lake Superior State in 1973 and is an avid supporter of Laker athletics. During this year\u2019s Great Lake State Weekend, Bosbous was named Recipient of the Lighthouse Recognition Award. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

Light the Lamp \/ United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n
\n

Lake Superior State Athletics and the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula held the annual \u201cLight the Lamp for the United Way\u201d event on Friday, Nov. 15 during the Lake State vs. Michigan Tech hockey game. The event put a spotlight on the United Way of the EUP and the work they do to help the most vulnerable members of our Tri-County Area. Light the Lamp is one of the multiple initiatives that are part of the ongoing relationship between LSSU athletics and the United Way of the EUP. Other initiatives include the Giving Thanks Mobile Food Pantry Distribution Project, Global Youth Services Day, Read United and the Citizens Review Panel.
