From humble beginnings in rural Northern Michigan to a distinguished career in manufacturing and engineering, Arthur \u201cArt\u201d Disbrow\u2019s journey exemplifies tenacity, ambition, and a deep connection to Lake Superior State University.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Art\u2019s early years were spent in modest conditions, without electricity or running water. A move to a new home near Ann Arbor at age 11 brought new opportunities, but when the time came to choose a college, Art was drawn back to Northern Michigan. The influence of a trusted high school teacher and a desire for a more personal college experience led him to the Soo Branch of Michigan Tech (now LSSU), a decision he describes as one of the best of his life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI never second-guessed my choice,<\/em>\u201d Art recalls. \u201cWith only about 200 students, the Soo felt like one big family. The faculty were outstanding and genuinely cared about our success, going out of their way to be helpful.<\/em>\u201d This supportive environment provided the foundation for his future endeavors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Art graduated from the Soo Tech Branch in 1953 and went on to enjoy a remarkable 40-year career in manufacturing and engineering, retiring as President of Hartzell Propeller in Piqua, Ohio. Throughout his career, Art remained committed to community service, serving in leadership roles with organizations such as UVMC Hospital, the Piqua Salvation Army, and Hospice of Miami County. His dedication earned him Piqua\u2019s highest community service honor, the Order of George, in 1993.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An avid golfer and fisherman, Art captained Soo Tech\u2019s inaugural golf team and has continued to share his passion for the sport. His connection to LSSU remains strong, demonstrated by his leadership role in establishing the LSSU Golden Graduate Scholarship in 2015. This initiative supports students by uniting alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago to invest in the next generation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLeading new graduates into the Taffy Abel Arena each year is an honor,<\/em>\u201d says Art. \u201cSitting in the front row with fellow Golden Graduates reminds me of the transformative power of education and the bonds we share as alumni.<\/em>\u201d Art is an active participant of the Golden Graduate Society, which includes those who left campus at least fifty years ago and are invited back each year to take part in LSSU’s Commencement Ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n

Art\u2019s dedication to LSSU extends further through the Arthur Disbrow Family Scholarship, an endowment benefiting students in pre-professional programs. This scholarship reflects his unwavering commitment to ensuring future generations have the same opportunities that shaped his life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Art\u2019s legacy is one of leadership, generosity, and pride in his alma mater. His story is a tribute to the impact of LSSU\u2019s close-knit community and the enduring value of education in transforming lives.<\/span><\/p>\n
